Waverley Financial Position - Blair

Councillor Alan Blair has asked for Inverclyde Council to assist in Saving the Waverly which is now in a precarious financial position.

Alan Blair believes that it is in the interests of Inverclyde to help the Waverly project survive as a “working” museum reflecting Greenock’s engineering past and also promote tourism on the Riverclyde

Alan Blair said “I recognise that the Council gives indirect support to the charitable company which operates the Waverley, in that free berthing is given at the Customs House. I have suggested that given the problems which presently exist it may be appropriate for Inverclyde Council to take a lead position with a view to agreeing joint assistance plan from the relevant Local Authorities to ensure the survival of the Waverley.

The relevant Local Authorities would presumably include Glasgow, West Renfrew, West Dumbarton and North Ayrshire.

There would of course have to be appropriate conditions attached to any financial help, but nonetheless, I would not think that the sums involved would be impossible to produce. Something over £2 Million was recently required for the Tall Ships Event and our contribution to any “Save the Waverley Campaign” would be a tiny fraction of that sum.”
