Gourock/Dunoon Ferry – Possible Job Losses

.

The decision to bring to an end the vehicular ferry from Gourock Pier to Dunoon Pier is a serious setback.

What has happened reflects little credit on Inverclyde Council which unlike Argyll Council, made no serious effort to participate in the consultation process in advance of this decision.  Our representative on the Clyde Ferry Users’ Group put no proposals to the Council which could and should have supported Professor Kay and the Dunoon Council.  The arguments were there to be put as Neil Kay has demonstrated over a period of years.

We should now do everything possible to save jobs at the CalMac office in Gourock.  Already we have been told that staff cuts are on the way but it is not clear where.  The Council has an obligation to help keep the Gourock office jobs here and to lobby the Scottish Government for that.

We should also demand to know how increased lorry traffic through Gourock can be handled and problems in Kempock Street and elsewhere controlled.  Likewise, what is to be done to cope with parking at Western Ferries Terminal?

The Scottish Government has backtracked in a serious way on this whole issue.  The least the Council can do, albeit belatedly, is to try to limit the damage which will result.  This is both in connection with possible job losses and also the nonsense of having what is to be called a “Traffic Hub” at Gourock Station, when there is not to be a ferry to take a vehicle across the water.
