Council Report May 2011 - Alan Blair
The news in recent days has obviously been dominated by the success of the S.N.P. in the Scottish Election and the poor results for other Parties.
If we are to make a comeback, this will have to be at the local election next year and the job of our Liberal Democrat councillors is to help lay the ground for that. . At this stage some positives should be borne in mind. Many people now are willing to switch their vote around at different elections - Scottish, Westminster, European , and local.
In 2007 we had the huge complication of two elections, local and national, on the same day. That will not be the case next year, so local issues will be the focus of attention.
Another question is the S.N.P, they have made little impact on the Council's actions or position. Next May, the public may well take the view that they are not choosing Alex Salmond rather than Gray or his successor; - they are choosing local representatives for local issues.
Things are now going badly for the Council: condition of our roads and footpaths the third worst in Scotland: failure of the £5 million "efficiency" programme; suspension of four senior officials; collapse of the Gourock Central Development plan; disappointing attainment levels in several schools; failure of the Building Service Department to submit a key tender on time.
As Cllr Ciano Rebbechi has put it- "If you don't buy a ticket, you won't be in the raffle".
I could go on, but the point I make, is that evidence is growing by the day, that the Labour/Conservative coalition of Inverclyde Council are in trouble.
We certainly have a long climb ahead, but we have a few stepping stones to help us, and to coin a phrase a year is a long time in politics.
