Fyfe - Kilmacolm Community CentreCllr Tom Fyfe - Kilmacolm press release
I have yet to meet anyone who has not been impressed by our new community centre. With minor reservations about the “heavy” appearance of the entrance, the design features have even passed the critical assessment of Frank Walker!
It is important to understand that the Centre will not be run by Inverclyde Council but by local people – by the Board of the Kilmacolm New Community Centre Company (KNCC). This company was set up by Jim Wood in June 2003 and has been the driving force maintaining the momentum of the project. Not many people would be able to get hundreds of people out to public meetings about a community centre on cold wet winter evenings but Jim Wood managed! Now that the centre is beginning to function it is important that the momentum is maintained. KNCC seems to me to be off loading its responsibilities by asking Inverclyde Leisure to take over the day to day management of the Centre. Why could we not employ local villagers directly to staff the Centre?
Some clubs appear to have reservations about using the facilities on the grounds of cost. The prices are certainly higher than they were for the old centres but they are competitive and the facilities will be so much better. Everything costs more these days! Hopefully those clubs with reservations will be able to negotiate satisfactory rates and will get involved.
Clearly there will be teething troubles. The potential conflict between the cafe and the running of coffee mornings almost every Saturday in the winter months should be easily resolved as should the need for flexibility in determining the opening and closing hours.
We all must use the Centre to the full, get involved in helping to run it successfully and support it financially.
