European Convention of Human Rights - Anderson

Inverclyde Liberal Democrat Vice Chairman Gordon Anderson has backed Nick Clegg's defence of Human Rights, the incorporation of the European convention on human rights into domestic legislation, an Intervention also backed by Liberty director Shami Chakrabarti.

In a recent article for the guardian newspaper, Nick Clegg highlighted his position on Human Rights.

Gordon Anderson said “This is a clear example of the Liberal Democrats holding back the excesses of the Conservative party, had they been in a minority government I am certain they would be looking to the opposition benches of other parties for support of their own policies.”

“Under the previous Labour Government there was a deterioration of Civil Liberties with local authorities attempts at snooping on law-abiding families, innocent people having their DNA held on an national DNA database and their intention of bringing in an ID card Scheme.”

"If we are to promote human rights abroad, it is a must that we uphold them here at home to lead by example when encouraging other nations to improve their own Human Rights record."
