Reforms to Parental Leave
Inverclyde Liberal Democrat Vice-Chair Gordon Anderson has welcomed the announcement by Nick Clegg, outlining plans to give couples more freedom to organise their parental leave after the birth of a baby.
Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg confirmed that from April fathers will be able to take any unused maternity leave themselves if their partners go back to work early, as well as announcing plans to consult on further reforms to the current system of parental leave. Nick Clegg also stated his intention that a new system of shared parental leave be in place by 2015. Nick Clegg said: “Too many parents feel trapped by the current, rigid rules. We want to give them the flexibility that sets them free. “This is not an easy area for Government, but the Coalition Government will seek to get the balance right. Supporting and empowering parents, particularly those most in need, and particularly in these difficult times. And helping all parents better balance work and home.” Inverclyde Vice-Chair Gordon Anderson stated "This highlights our commitment to delivering fairness and change. The changes will clearly have positive implications on the relationship between children and their parents. This step alongside the end of the default retirement age (from the 29th of July) and the extended Rights to Flexible working (from the 18th of April 2011) shows that Liberal Democrats are making a key difference in Government - with a focus on real long term change that will benefit the UK" |
