Right to Flexible Working

From the 18th of April 2011, the right to flexible working is to be extended to parents of children under 18 benefiting an estimated 300,000 people. This move will help create a fairer, family-friendly society.

This  change will give parents of all children, regardless of age, the same right to request flexible working. It will also make it simpler for employers and employees to identify whether they are eligible to make a request.

Vice-Chair Gordon Anderson said "This move, alongside the announcement made by Employment Relations Minister Ed Davey regarding the end of the default retirement age on the 29th of July, clearly sets out the government’s plans to improve fairness and provide employers an opportunity to utilise talent and experience."

“Under the current arrangements, it may not always be practical (due to other commitments) for individuals to work full time. This change will mean that this group can work flexibly and be rewarded for doing so, instead of having to choose between their commitments”
