Scottish farmers can learn from Glastir - Lyon

George Lyon, Liberal Democrat MEP for Scotland, will today meet Welsh Rural Affairs Minster Elin Jones to learn about Glastir, the Welsh Assembly Government's new land management scheme.

George Lyon MEPThe Glastir scheme has been designed to tackle the causes of climate change as well as protect food security and the future viability of farming. It will contract farmers to manage the land in a way that meets today's challenges and priorities, including biodiversity, climate change and water management.

Mr Lyon is a guest of the Welsh Assembly Government at the Royal Welsh Show in Llanelwedd which attracts 250,000 visitors. He will also meet with representatives of the NFU in England and Wales as well as the FUW.

Commenting, Mr Lyon said:

"I have been invited by the by Welsh Assembly Government to hear first hand from the Minister what Glastir will mean for Welsh farmers after it is introduced in 2012.

"I will also hear from Welsh farmers about what practical lessons they have learned from these new ideas for supporting upland producers including intensive milk producers.

"I want Scottish farmers to be in a position to benefit from the best of these ideas. Learning from the action taken by the other devolved administration is one way that we can ensure the sustainability of our food production system and future food security."
