Asda announcement one step on the long road to changing Scotland’s abusive relationship with alcohol: Finnie

5.19.39pm BST (GMT +0100) Thu 22nd Jul 2010

Commenting on the announcement by the supermarket Asda today that they are to stop selling alcohol below the cost of duty plus VAT, Liberal Democrat Health spokesperson Ross Finnie MSP said:

"Liberal Democrats have long called for an end to the below cost selling of alcohol, and so this announcement from Asda is therefore welcome.

“Putting a price floor in place of duty plus VAT is an important step in tackling the sale of alcohol at irresponsible prices.

“This is however only one step on the long road to changing Scotland’s abusive relationship with alcohol, which costs the public health purse millions of pounds each year.”
