Health secretary must examine cycle of readmission for mental health patients: Finnie

5.15.35pm BST (GMT +0100) Tue 27th Jul 2010

Commenting on the latest statistics which show that 57% of all mental health inpatients are re-admissions, Liberal Democrat Health spokesperson Ross Finnie MSP said:

Those with mental health problems need to be cared for in the way that suits their needs best.

“The continued cycle of readmissions for psychiatric patients in Scotland is worrying. I am concerned that this figure has only decreased by 3.5% for males and 2.3% for females in the last year.

“While some patients may have to be readmitted for their own well being, other patients’ may be being discharged too early.

“I call on the Health Secretary to examine this cycle of readmissions and give her assurance that patients with mental health issues are afforded the best care for their needs.
